Information of Liberia

Liberia was named for the river which passes through the city. It is also known as "The White City" since the ground is formed primarily of limestone deposits from the most recent eruption of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. On very windy days this white powder is lifted up and covers the streets and houses.

Liberia has a population of over 35,000 people. In July they celebrate the Annexation of Guanacaste, which took place July 25th, 1824. This is a very big celebration for all of the people of Guanacaste and Costa Rica in general. The celebrations include parades, fairs, and other activities full of folklore, typical dances, and lots of joy.

This city offers many attractions for the visitor. One is Africa Mia, which consists of an African-type safari through the property where you will find giraffes, elephants, zebras, and more. This is a very interesting and enjoyable tour option for the whole family.

To the northeast of Liberia you will find the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, which has of beautiful trails full of wildlife, volcanic clouds, hot springs, waterfalls, rivers, and its famous "boiling pots" which are sections of naturally boiling mud, all making this an unforgettable experience.

In Liberia Costa Rica you will find everything you need from basic health and banking services, to grocery stores, malls, food courts, and more. Flamingo, Tamarindo, Conchal, Coco and Papagayo beaches are all less than an hour's drive away.
